The woods are cold and snowy
The sky is gray and graceless
The trees are brown and leafless
A frozen wind blows, unforgiving
An old woman and man
Walk slowly through the trees
Deliberate in every step
One feeble foot in front of the other
As they walk they wonder
They marvel at how the world has changed.
They remember when the woods
were warm and wonderful
They remember when their hair was not so gray
The warm sun falling on their shoulders
Lovely green leaves on the trees
Flowers dancing in the undergrowth
How the March of time has
Wrought a world of change!
How life has brought joy and heartache
And wonder and weariness!
They stop and look longingly around them.
O for those golden days again!
The old man speaks
Tenderly and lovingly
“Time is moving on
Marching like a ruthless army.
Everything around us has changed
Except my love for you.
“If I could walk these woods again
From the beginning to the end
From sunshine to sunset
With every heartache and every tear
“I would do it all again
If I could do it with you.”
